I generally convert them to vector graphics now before I do anything with them. It makes the quality of different sized gifs for website so much better, particularly if you need something a little larger than you started with. It would be nice to have a repository of vector versions of things but most people don't have illustrator. You're right about png. Excellent format particularly if you use a program like fireworks which is more targeted toward web work than photoshop. Hmmm... Maybe an article on graphics applications...
