Daisy -- This is wonderful news! And I would be delighted to use you as guinea pigs again. Actually I expect the youth will be pushing Communication's envelope soon, and that's a very good thing.

Next chapter(in what will no doubt be a longer book than even J.K. Rowling can write) - I am the aforementioned Director of Religious Education and while all that Anna Belle has said about our session is true, I would also like y'all to know that it doesn't take some seeds very long to begin sprouting. One of our RE Committee co-chairs is quite enthused about exploring the possibilities. She is convinced of the value, even if she cannot yet visualize the particulars. And I believe that she will lead the way for the rest of the committee.

As an aside, I'd like to mention a peculiar conceit of my own: Those of us who work with children, regardless of chronological age, are often quite young. Maybe y'all should consider using us for guinea pigs more often!

With thanks to you all for the work you do that so greatly enhances and supports our work...

Thanks, all. Great comments!

Ms T -- The age demographic was mostly middle-aged, plus one person who is even more senior than I (gasp). The youngest was maybe 30. One fact that helped this group is to learn that the New York Times uses blogging software extensively. The Times just has such a place in US UU hearts, no matter what part of the country.

Don -- That's great that you and your minister are onto this! I think your concern is legit, but I'd say run with your minister's energy, and then when you have time, see if you can find other leaders who have potential. Maybe in a few months my church will have a blog or two you can point to. And I second Scott's suggestion. I'm thinking about doing a "Blogging Church" Adult RE session at some point.

These barriers strike me as real, in fact, this general sense of blogs (personal details and time-sink) have kept me away up until now. I'm just changing my view and getting ready to join the party. My minister, well ahead of me (I'm the webmaster), is pushing. I just read The Blogging Church (from the recommendation here: http://www.faithandweb.com/2007/06/26/top-10-tips-for-church-blogging/ ).

My thought at the moment is to set up a Minister's Blog, and try to do it in a framework where it will be easy to add more blogs for our church (Relig Ed, Social Justice, etc. etc.) in the future. One thing that worries me about this approach is that the Minister's Blog may set an expectation that other blogs would be similar, thus inhibiting possible blogs like a Social Justice group blog.

Advice?

Interesting description of hurdles. Can I ask what demographic in terms of age was involved?

In general, I've found that when I mention my blog to Baby Boomers or Institutionalists, they think that I'm listing personal details of my life online and that I spend huge amounts of my life chronicling my breakfast habits (or sex life) online.

It makes me think (again) that a little RSS/general aggregation education wouldn't be bad.
